Checking the status of your screen
Once your screen is connected, you can be confident that the NowSignage platform will offer continuous visibility and real-time updates on the operational status of all your screens.
When on your NowSignage screens dashboard within your project, you will see an overview of the total number of screens you have as well as the live status of each of those screens. When any new screen is added and the PIN is subsequently entered into a live screen, your NowSignage account will automatically connect and communicate with the NowSignage app to monitor its performance and provide live status updates.
-
Every five minutes, the NowSignage client app installed on the device sends an HTTPS ping request to the NowSignage backend (CMS/API) to report its status.
Important clarification:
This ping is initiated by the device, not the NowSignage backend.
What the ping does:
-
Confirms the app is online, powered, and connected.
-
If a device misses one scheduled ping (e.g., due to network issues), its screen status is marked as Intermittent (amber).
-
If two consecutive pings are missed, the status is updated to Offline (red), typically within 15 minutes of the first missed ping.
-
- The device/player detects the connection status and reports it to the application. The application does not actively check connectivity itself – it relies on the device's built-in network detection mechanisms.
Note: Hovering over the status icon displays the timestamp of the latest device check-in, as determined by the most recent five-minute ping.
- All - This indicator shows the complete count of screens associated with your account, regardless of their current connection or operational state.
- Online (Green) - The screen is operational, receiving power, maintaining a stable internet connection, and running the NowSignage app as intended.
- Intermittent (Amber) - The screen’s network connection is unstable, resulting in intermittent connectivity. If this persists, the screen will transition to Offline mode.
- Offline (Red) - This indicates that the device has either lost its internet connection, lost power, or has been switched off. If the screen remains powered, it may continue operating in offline mode. Additionally, if the NowSignage app has been closed on the device, the status will display as offline.
Offline mode occurs when your screen loses its internet connection but continues displaying cached content that was previously stored when the PIN was entered. While in offline mode, the screen will not receive or download any new content updates. You can identify a screen in offline mode by a small grey Wi-Fi icon in the bottom right corner of the display, which remains visible until the device is reconnected to your network.
- Never Connected - This indicates that the screen is new and has not yet been activated or had a license applied. Additionally, a screen that is not connected or activated will not have a PIN assigned to it.
