Why We Recommend Android 8.0+ For NowSignage

NowSignage supports installation on devices running Android 5.1 (Lollipop) and above. However, we recommend Android 8.0 (Oreo) or higher as the preferred minimum version. While older devices may run the app, they typically lack the performance, security, and feature support required for reliable digital signage in real-world deployments.

Why Android 8.0 and Above?

1.  Performance & Stability

• Android 8.0+ introduced Project Treble, separating the vendor implementation from the core OS. This greatly improves system-level stability and update reliability.

  • Playback lag during high-resolution video

  • Freezes when multiple scheduled items or widgets run

  • App restarts if the device becomes resource-constrained

    Memory management in older Android versions is less efficient, leading to:

• Devices with newer OS versions better support GPU-accelerated rendering, improving transitions and media playback.

2. Security Enhancements

• Android 5.1 – 7.1 no longer receive security patches from Google or OEMs.

  • Android 8.0+ introduced Doze mode improvements and background app limits to prevent apps from being killed unexpectedly during idle periods.

What If You’re Using Android 5.1–7.x?

You can install the NowSignage APK and run signage on older Android versions. However, there are known limitations:

• Manual intervention may be required for updates, rebooting, or app recovery

• Increased security risks due to outdated OS

If you’re using legacy hardware, it’s recommended to:

• Keep deployments small and non-critical

• Monitor playback stability closely

• Schedule regular reboots or maintenance windows
