Video content hosted on YouTube may be subject to the platform’s standard advertising systems. This means ads can be automatically displayed before, during, or alongside content based on YouTube’s internal processes, including viewer targeting, content suitability, and advertiser demand. Ad formats, frequency, and placement are controlled entirely by YouTube and may vary per viewer.
NowSignage has no control over this behaviour, and it cannot be modified or suppressed at the platform level.
Steps to add a YouTube Stream:
- Click into the 'Playlists' tab on the left navigation menu.
- Click into the 'Add to playlist' dropdown menu and select 'Other Apps' from the list
- To add YouTube to your playlist, simple click the [+ Add button]
Once you make your selection, the YouTube stream settings menu will appear, providing you with options to customise and manage your stream effectively.
How to locate the YouTube stream URL:
- In YouTube - Search for the video you would like to stream.
Once the video loads, locate the 'Share' button to access the sharing options.
- Click the 'Copy' button the copy the URL
- Paste this into the 'External URL' box in NowSignage.

Optional - If the YouTube video has available subtitles, click the captions tick box to enable these. (This feature is available on Android v3.0.2+ and all other app builds v0.6.0+)
Captions are not currently compatible with the BrightSign build of the NowSignage app.
Please note - The duration setting does not automatically adjust to match the video's length; you must enter this information manually. For instance, if the YouTube video is 3 minutes long, you should input the precise duration in seconds (180 seconds) to ensure the video plays in its entirety.
- Once you have finalised your selections, click 'Add to playlist' to include the video stream.
Please note: The video stream will not play in the screen preview window, and will display with the YouTube play button displaying. - Please use the live screen to view.
Troubleshooting/Playback Limitations:
On screen message - 'This video is unavailable.'
YouTube (Google) gives content owners control over where their videos can be embedded and played. Some publishers—especially news broadcasters such as Sky News—block external playback. When this happens, you may see messages like “Video not available” when using embed or share links. If you encounter this, you’ll need to source and use an alternative feed.
- Device Capabilities: The actual playback resolution depends on the device’s screen and hardware. For example:
- A screen with a 1080p resolution will not display 4K content without issues arising.
- Older or lower-powered devices may not support higher resolutions due to hardware limitations.
- Some device operating systems may limit resolution options.
- Playback is not playing correctly/showing an error -- Check app version is supported and update.
